I think if you have ever wondered what beer touched with a bit of vanilla, mango or honey would taste like, you have the venturesome spirit that SingleSpeed Brewing Co. in Cedar Falls talks about. Today, flavor pairings seem limitless if you’re a craft brewer.
As a consumer, the only problem is that you may have to wait for a certain time of year or a certain day of the week to try a one-of-a-kind brew. The brewing process takes time, care and attention. We’re talking about the small-scale, single-batch breweries and mom and pop shops located just down the street from your home. Wouldn’t the fresh flavor of a jalapeno beer be just the right ticket for grilling out on a summer evening?
SingleSpeed Brewing Co. is a locally owned brewery operating in downtown Cedar Falls. Their focus is on small-batch unique beers. In operation since 2012, they are community-minded, partnering with other local businesses such as Sidecar Coffee Roasters, Cedar Falls Food Coop and the Prairie Rapids Project (they will donate $1 from each sale of their Whitewater Black Beer to the whitewater project). Check out their blog for a weekly beer list or show up on a Wednesday evening from 4-6 pm for their Brew Debut.
Guerrilla Brewing Co. in Waterloo may be one of our best kept secrets. Their microbrewery is located on Falls Avenue in Waterloo in the same building as Rudy’s Tacos and the Lava Lounge. Is there a more fitting location for such a unique brewery than next to a great food locale and the funky vibes of the 60’s lounge? We think not. For now, the Lava Lounge and Rudy’s Tacos are the only places serving their fresh take on beer. They tap a new keg each Thursday (and only on Thursday), so be sure to stop and try a pint before the keg runs dry.
Whether you decide to take a growler of Beck’s Craft Microbrew home or drink it with your favorite burger or Big Time Tenderloin, you won’t be disappointed Beck’s Sports Brewery. Ask about their seasonal brews or just forge ahead with a Panther Pale Ale, Hawkeye Golden Wheat, Cy’s Clone Ale or their Black Hawk Braxator!
One of our nearby communities also caters to local drinking establishments. Broad Street Brewing Co. in Reinbeck is making a name for themselves with their beer on tap at 26 locations throughout northeast and central Iowa. You have to like a place that serves a Coo Coo Cachoo, Chipper Sipper or a Sticky Wicket!
Not sure you want to drive to all the breweries? Sample a variety of our locally brewed craft beers at the 10th annual Hops on Main held on Thursday, April 9, in downtown Cedar Falls. Samples will be available at select bars and restaurants in downtown Cedar Falls. A limited number of tickets are available from Community Main Street (319-277-0213) or at SingleSpeed Brewing Co. for $20. The event will run from 5:30 pm until 9:00 pm.
If you want to save a few pennies, create your dream craft brew or just wrap yourself in the brewing experience, you may want to brew your own beer. It’s easy and the experts at Kitchen Wines & Brew Shop in Cedar Falls can help. Their unique store has all the supplies and books you need to get started. If you’re still not sure whether you want to give it a try, just ask about their next brewing demonstration.
Our local brew pubs go beyond your basic ale and their brews beg for you to give them a try. Whether you brew your own or shop local, it’s time to be a fearless beer drinker!
There a lot of fine breweries in northeast Iowa. If you know of another brewery operating in The Cedar Valley and supplying to stores in our area, let us know.
